You may remember our denim jacket project for Manchester Art Gallery’s Unpicking Couture exhibition (on until January 2025). Our visibly mended vintage denim jacket shows the joy and creativity possible in the process of extending the life cycle of clothing.

Inspired by this exhibition, we ran a 4 week course in collaboration with 42nd Street and Manchester Art Gallery. With a group of creative young people, we explored the exhibition after hours to get ideas and inspiration. The group were full of inspiration, drawing on the silhouettes of the period pieces, the structures achieved in the textiles, and dopamine dressing.

Over the 4 weeks we taught attendees various reworking skills for their own projects. Some examples include turning a vintage jacket into a button up skirt and a ruffle skirt made from a dress. They tackled bleach dying to transform a t-shirt, added pockets to jumpers, and upcycled a plain shirt into a ruffled pinafore top, using the existing button fastenings in the construction. There was so much variety in the projects, highlighting everyone’s creativity and unique sense of style, and showcasing the wide array of techniques you can use when reworking clothes.

Keep an eye out for more projects with Manchester Art Gallery and Stitched Up in the future, inspired by their wonderful exhibitions!
