People often ask if organic cotton is ‘better’ than conventionally-grown cotton. Yes, it’s more expensive, but if you ask us it’s worth every penny.

Here are 5 reasons to choose organic cotton over conventional cotton:

πŸ‘‡πŸŒŽ 1 // Combats climate change

Organic cotton emits up to 46% less greenhouse gas than non-organic. Organic cotton farmers do not use fossil fuel based fertilisers and pesticides on their crops.

πŸ’¦ 2 // Saves water

Most organic cotton is grown in rain-fed areas, meaning farmers rely on rain to water their cotton, instead of having to extract water from the ground which can put pressure on water supplies in local communities. The healthy soils nurtured by organic farmers are better able to soak up water during floods and hold it during droughts. Hazardous synthetic pesticides and fertilisers are banned in organic farming, which helps to keep rivers, lakes and drinking water cleaner too.

✊ 3 // Gives control to farmers not GM companies

Genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned in organic farming, so organic cotton farmers are not reliant on a handful of GM companies to sell them patented seeds. Instead, they save their own seeds year after year. They also always grow other crops alongside cotton, giving them a more diverse income.

β›” 4 // Eliminates hazardous synthetic pesticides

Organic farmers use natural methods like crop rotation to control pests and diseases, instead of harmful chemicals. Hazardous synthetic pesticides used in non-organic farming can damage ecosystems, poison waterways and endanger workers who can’t always afford the safety equipment they need to protet themselves. Conventional cotton alone is responsible for 16% of all insecticides sold worldwide.

🌱 5 // Nurtures healthy soils

Healthy soils nurtured by organic farmers are more biodiverse and are better able to retain water in droughts and absorb water during flooding.
