Sewing is a fantastically versatile skill that you’ll use throughout your life, and learning it as a child makes it much less intimidating when you need to sew a button on in the future! Fashion Flip, an upcycling workshop for ages 7-16, is running on 5th and 6th August at Bridge 5 Mill.

Here’s 5 reasons why we think kids should get taught how to sew.

  1. Good for wellbeing

It’s been long recorded that crafting is good for your mental health. Sewing engages your mind and your body in a calming and repetitive action, which can help with emotional regulation. Learning to sew is not only learning a skill to complete projects, but learning a skill that helps combat the stresses of everyday life.

  1. Express their individuality

Fast fashion is full of cookie cutter designs, and it can be hard to find your own personal style. When you’re a kid, you don’t have as much freedom as an adult, so one way to express your individuality is through the clothes you wear. By learning reworking techniques at our Fashion Flip workshop, participants can make their wardrobe uniquely theirs.

  1. Boost self esteem

It’s a real confidence boost to be able to complete physical projects. In our Fashion Flip workshops, participants are able to see their ideas transformed into items they can wear. We offer a helpful and non judgemental environment where kids can explore their creativity and boost their self esteem.

  1. Skills for life

Sewing – both by machine and by hand – is a skill you can use for life, even if you don’t plan on making your own clothes from scratch in the future. Taking up trousers, patching a hole, making a costume of your favourite moment from Married at First Sight for a fancy dress hen do; the applications of sewing are endless!

  1. Teaches them about a more sustainable future

It’s vital that we teach the children of the future that the ways to create a more sustainable world are possible and achievable. More children than ever are experiencing climate anxiety, and feeling unable to control their environment. Learning to repair, reduce textile waste, and rework clothing gives them the tools to make a positive difference for the future of the planet. The antidote to hopelessness is action.
