Manchester Histories Fest: Reviving the Lost Art of Make Do and Mend

Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

As part of Manchester Histories Festival, visit our Chorlton workshop for a tour of our vintage sewing machine collection. These beautiful machines, some hand-powered, one treadle and one electric, were all made between 1925-1950. They hark back to a time when Manchester was the centre of the British textile industry and no home was complete without its own sewing machine and resident seamstress.

During this time, resources were scarce and clothes rationing was imposed. Coupons were allocated for clothes based on the fabric and labour required to produce them. As a result, mending clothes and keeping them going for longer became imperative.

After the tour you’ll have the opportunity to use the heritage machines and have a go at hand-cranking and treading yourself! And if you have a special item you’d like to mend, feel free to bring it along.

This is a FREE event, and there’s non need to book, just pop in anytime between 1-4pm
